Been there, done that.  The game I have is pre-XP, and the graphics card is apparently too new.  I've tried just about everthing, safe mode in the game, compatability, etc., but it just doesn't work.  It worked on my old computer with XP.  The difference is my new computer has a different graphics card.  My last one was, I think, an ATI Radeon?  The one I have in my new computer is NVidia GEForce.

Try uninstalling the graphics driver... It may let you use a standard VGA/SVGA generic driver (Just make you have re-downloaded the driver before doing so)
