So, as many of you have probably seen lately there has been some database issues. To make it simple the site has grown to a size where I am faced with two options to keep it alive.
These are
- Increase Server Capacity (Upgrading to a new server with additional Memory)
- Purge Old Content
Now, this is where I need to state something. IF we go with increasing server capacity I won't deny but it would be extremely helpful if we had more than Matt subscribing to the Sponsor plans. As this would be effectively tripling the monthly operational costs of the site. And I do mean that literally one more subscriber would make a huge difference.
Here's a break down of where fund sourcing
Robert Leiper (Me) - 79%
Sponsors - 10%
Robbie Mulder - 11%
(The software licensing to keep the site working is roughly 150USD a year, hosting is up to 300USD a year + vendor costs of fixing various problems that I cannot do myself)
So please vote if you would like us to keep the content, or kill the content. Noting importantly that deleting previous content will only delay the move if the site begins to get more members again

I am a student, and have not been able to find a job yet. =/
So I really can't ask you to upgrade to a new server without me
helping in some kind of way, 'cause it wouldn't feel right.
So I think maybe we should delete content that seriously is
not used.

A few of the main advantages
- More control over memory use
- More back end configuration control (allowing refinined upload management)
- We could offer actual website hosting to members for those who wish to use it

If you clear the clutter of crap that is both ancient and not relevant, would it not help regardless of server, new or old?
The issue there is both time and reviewing it to make sure we keep things that may be required if there were legal action ever taken by the site. I am going to be running some tests this weekend or at some point soon to see how the performance between the two varies.

The thought is appreciated, but we would not allow students to actively donate since their future is slightly more important =)
