Something I have noticed in the general population of people 25 and under, is that only a handful of us seem capable of holding a job for more than six months. I've been at my job for over two years now, and when I tell people this, they are shocked.
"Oh my god, you've been working at the same place for a WHOLE two years? Wait, wait, you've actually advanced from the position you were originally hired for?!".
I don't understand why this is so shocking to them. Its not like keeping a job is hard. All you pretty much have to do is show up on time, and do the minimum work required. If you wish to ever advance, do more than is required. Is that really all that difficult?
It just bugs me that young, hard-working individuals, such as myself and many others have to overcome the stereotype set by lazy teenagers with bad attitudes, before we get recognized for our accomplishments....
Is It Really That Hard To Keep A Job?

I think it's partially a product of people expecting instant gratification, so Patience isn't exactly something that's common these days..
I work with a few people like this, but the basic attitude is "If I don't get a promotion every few months this job's a waste of my time I'm better than this"
But yes, a lot of people think they should get promoted based on *just* doing their job..
Right now, there are 214 Tickets in my teams queue
Two people own 32 each (myself and one other)
1 Person has 26
1 Person has 27
1 Person has 25
1 Person has 17
1 Person has 15
1 Person has 11
1 Person has 10
1 Person has 5
now, thats not including our *newest* person our my managers (which is about 15-20 tickets?)
On top of the 32 tickets I own
- 1 is a management Escalation that I was given to fix
- I am re-writing this division of Microsofts Support Process for Tier 1 Support
- Drafting a Policy and Responsibility document for my team
- Running a customized Report for a customer (not something were required to do but it will make them happy)
- Creating a new schedual with one of my co-workers to give us all 4 days on and 3 days off with 11 hour days
The person with 15.. Doesn't answer half his tickets and makes shit up and just makes personal calls and sits on youtube all day (We don't care if someones on youtube,MSN etc as long as they get work done)
The person with 5, sits there and does.. nothing, no pro-active work flow management doesn't check other peoples tickets to learn.
Trust me Les, on this one I feel you even knowing were in two totally different industries but it's not fun having to both carry other people who don't deserve it AND have to prove your value 10x harder than the person out side of your age group just because people think your an immature little shit for a brain etc etc
(again this was written with my brain working off like... 2.5 hours of sleep)
Also the screenshot is what I'm doing right now..... (Some shits blacked out to for privacy reasons)

I know a number of twenty-somethings that have had more jobs in their short years that I have had my entire life! I think it is partly to blame on parents who are, quite often, over-indulgent, handing out money, instead of making them earn it. I HAD to work as a teen or I didn't have money for gas, clothes, etc. That was how things were. If I wanted something, I had to work for it. I find that those experiences gave me a strong work ethic. I find that ethic lacking in many people, but not necessarily limited to the 20-somethings on which this topic focuses.
And I would like to say, GOOD FOR YOU, Les! I am sure you are a positive influence.
