Suggestions To Make The Site More User Friendly!

I'm looking to stream line the site and make it a little easier to navigate.
What I'd like is people to give suggestions as to what they feel will make the site easier for you to use.
Please remeber some of this topics posts require moderation approval. If it does not error out after you click Submit/Post you will not need post it multiple times it is just not visible

Maybe color code topics according to area of interest. What ever happened to Survivor and all those forum games?
Those were huge events that we always had a blast playing. Anyways, ya, my two cents is, it's great to have lots of variety, but if there's too many serious categories and not enough "fun" categories, it becomes a classroom, not a friendly environment. Does that make sense?
--Merged from Secondary Post--
I made a really long post but it didn't go for some reason.
I basically said, it would be nice if it was "warmer" a little more fun instead of so many serious topics.
What ever happened to the old games like survivor, ect?

Games of survivor can really only be played when our members have enough time in real life to come to the site and pay attention to something. Its understandable as people grow (and grow up) that things like going to work, and raising their families become a more important aspect of their lives than well posting in an online game where there really is no benefits of playing other than getting to know people.. You already know! (seem's kind of repetitive eh?)
If you feel the site could use a bit more in the fun section, find creative ways to bring that to the site and credit will be given where credit is due. But if it comes down to the site having nothing but stupid bullshit (again) where every topic strays to "OMG I WANT TO FUCK YOU" or "LOL TIME TO RAPE KITTENS" etc etc, the topics will quickly find them selves deleted.

I very much agree with this post, and it has been something I have long pushed for (stopping the almost weekly changes of site layouts) granted some are needed as content and the site grows but its not needed anywhere near as much as it currently is done. As it becomes counter intuitive and somewhat offensive to our older client base (Older as in been around here longer not as in Old like your a senior citizen.. ugh im tired whatever!!!)
One goal of the SSF 3.0 Project is to allow our members to have a portal page which THEY control. Which means you can control what you would like to see on it, and in some cases where the content is even displayed. At the moment I can't give a definitive example as I've had to take the Beta Site down due to issues with a run away script (which caused the host to suspend the site last week because of excessive server utilization)

lol You certainly haven't changed a bit. Maybe if you managed to take the stick out of your ass you wouldn't feel the need to control everything.

2) The content control is completely up to the people who OWN this site (pay its bills)
3) We remove offensive Members and content
It would be like me going into your home and telling everyone what a twat you are..
I took the time to approve a moderation required post (which I'll also state Rob required you to have.. NOT me...) and respond with information and other valuable advice (including on how YOU could help get topic types you wanted to see) how ever, it comes with a notice that we as in Any Owner or Moderator on the site can and WILL remove garbage that is deemed
1) Offensive
2) Rude
3) Inappropriate
Based on reports from OUR members.. Hence that little "! Report" button on most of our skins..
You received 1 warning from Rob before comming back and that was to not start shit.. Do not make me count this as an attempt to do so, especially after providing you with constructive feedback. You were banned once for a reason, it takes me under 30 seconds to repeat that process
To allow time to Deal with this twit, I have removed his ability to Post, or PM for at least 24 hours

It's something that I do agree with and am currently working very hard to implement.
Ideally Simone the goal is to find a layout that will be able to work with as little change as possible.
Unfortunately I don't have a lot to go on, because the only time I get "suggestions" is when people complain (bitch).
Basically I mainly hear :
"The site isn't fun enough"
I add entertaining content, and it's either not used or only a select group utilize it
"The site isn't serious enough"
So we add intellectual conversations and content that again, isn't always utilized or is only done so by a select group.
"There are too many forums"
So we contract forums and make more subforums
"I don't like subforums they're too confusing"
So it goes around and around and in the end.. no one ever seems pleased

One note to add, is if people complain make them provide you with information as to what and HOW they want to see the site change.. Remind them there are sometimes costs involved so not every suggestion can be dealt with even if we *want* to
A friend of mine who also runs a forums site (who was reading this) said (and noted how quickly a good majority of any forum owner would of banned the involved with in 30 seconds... Im sure Matt can verify this)
"Anything you post is a priveldge not a right when you are a guest some where that you do not ultimately own.." Kinda goes along with the phrase don't shit where you eat.
Anyway the goal and need is to keep the site
1) User Friendly
2) Clean enough for ALL age groups
3) Minimize Moderation to the point where its almost not required
4) Provide Respect for the Site Administrators
5) The Administrators to provide respect to its members
6) When Rules are violated, offending parties will be disciplined in all cases be it via "gagging", suspension or banning
A good example of how we are currently failing is this topic and members like Chris. You do not have to like someone to show respect, but it is a requirement of being here. That has not and will not ever change, and we (the Admin Group) will be taking a more serious stance than ever on this view
You all may agree with his statement that I have a "stick" up my ass, but take it from this perspective. In the years this site moved to this domain (and .org which had expired) I personally have spent (Not Rob, not Sven Not Anna.. Me) around 2200$ to keep this site alive. If I had of been a company billing time to maintaine and repair this site everytime something blew up.. I'd be a very rich man right now.
My responsabilities are to keep this site not only Legal, but also to cover the Investors (Rob, myself , Sven and Matt) from potential legal issues arising from membership use including complying with International Copyrights, Anti-spam laws and individual intelectual ownership laws for every country in which we operate.. Granted I have made some good friends here, just remeber that is not why I am ultimately here.. It is to help maintain a governing set of rules and policies to keep the site alive.. Something which I've had problems doing from a moral perspective and legal perspective over the years due to how members have abused this site..

I think we need to focus more on the serious topics
and less on the 'fun' ones.
But that's just me.

perhaps with regard to people posting silly things and saying they want to fuck this, that and the other....how about a fucking thread???.....i've seen it on a few forums...and basically it's a thread where people can swear to their hearts content (without abusing other people)...and not be pulled up for it...it would keep that language in one place
and yeh rob...sometimes you do seem like you have a stick up your ass..but to be fair...i can understand why sometimes....i do appreciate you work hard on this site (especially when robbie redecorates!!!!!)...and that ssf wouldn't be around if it wasn't for you...and anyways.....doesn't everybody act like they have a stick up their ass at some point????....but you also have a nice side to you...you'll help people out where needed....and you'll nearly always explain why things have happened or will happen
and yep...we all complain quick enough but never suggest stuff...so here's my two cents for what it's worth!!!
don't make too many changes and keep it simple...and keep a good mix of serious and fun stuff...it's a good mix and works

There was one post in a topic about rape where a member went on to say "Wow, I wish I could get raped by *insert person* its a total fetish" after someone poured their heart out about the trauma they endured after being raped..
Although not as dramatic as the above, its not uncommon on the site to see such an attitude where people think "Oh I bet Comedy can difuse a serious situtation"... when its intended to stay serious
The Goal is balance as you mentioned, its just hard to find said balance on a Forum with out unfortunately having to do heavy moderation work

The ratio of bitching to positive suggestions is daunting!
As for my "redecoration" Rob likes to blame me for a lot of stuff that *cough* he is some times responsible for.
Another problem is when we have mods on the site, they some times don't have an upgrade, so when the software is updated the mod stops working
*Point in case the videos for peoples profiles, The posting contest*
So none of this hating on Robbie business. I put a heck of a lot of work into this site too. So does Sven and Anna.
