I find that American Literature tends to have less likable heroes.
The Catcher in the Rye is a good example, Holden Caulfield is a douchebag
Whereas Classical English lit tends to have more developed rounded characters (in my opinion) in which "good people" are caught in tragic situations and therefore the characters are more likable (example, Oliver Twist, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, etc)
